Sillustani – Half day:

Sillustani is located 34 km from the city of Puno, on the esplanade of a peninsula surrounded by the waters of Lagoon Umayo. It is approximately a 35-minute drive along a paved road. Upon arrival, you will witness a series of impressive tombs belonging to the Kolla culture (1200-1450), which thrived in the northern area of the lagoon, in a locality known as Hatuncolla.

Chullpas are ancient funerary structures in the form of towers, used by pre-Columbian cultures such as the Kollas and Incas to bury important figures like leaders or priests. These structures served as mausoleums and were characterized by having an internal chamber where human remains were placed along with offerings such as food, pottery, and other items.

The design of the chullpas includes an external protective wall that safeguarded the internal structure. Many of them have a small entrance facing the east, symbolizing the connection of the deceased with the Sun God. Chullpas represent not only burial sites but also sacred spaces associated with the rituals and beliefs of these Andean cultures.

The name “Sillustani” derives from the words Quechua sillus (nail) and llustani (slide), which can be interpreted as “sliding nails.” This unique site combines profound cultural significance with architectural ingenuity, making it a must-visit destination.
